A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
