Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
